Three out of Five Stars is observational and absurd sketch comedy from Nick Davies, Sarah McCarthy, and Thomas Newman with videos added to their YouTube channel on a regular basis.
We asked the trio more about their videos and their goals for the future.
What was the inspiration and motivation to make comedy sketches for YouTube?
We started Three out of Five Stars last year when there was a big lull in the industry. Ultimately, we didn’t want to feel like we were powerless – sitting around waiting for someone to give us work, to call us in for an audition, to hire us, whatever. So we hired ourselves and started making our own work. We all have heaps of experience acting and writing – we’ve been to drama school, written short plays & films, and have always had the creative drive and ideas to start creating our own material.
Where do you get your ideas for the sketches from?
Most of what we do is observational, so an idea will usually come from seeing or hearing about something that we have a strong opinion on. We sometimes have idea-storming sessions, but we find that we really only need to run into each other at the bus stop to leave with four new ideas. We’d already seen that sketch comedy can be really hit-and-miss, especially if it seems like the performers are trying to pander to what they think the audience wants to see – so we trust what makes each other laugh.
Who is filming you; and what camera gear are you using?
We shoot the video ourselves – on a tripod if we’re doing a static or three-shot, and shot by the other actor for our two-shots and singles. We shoot on a Canon EOS 7D with a 50mm f/1.8 lens, sometimes resorting to a kit lens for the wide shots. A lot of our other equipment is DIY – we’ve made a stabiliser out of an old tripod and a Lav mic out of a pair of headphones.
What are you enjoying most about making the videos?
We enjoy the challenge of making something that’s both original and quality on a regular basis, and having a fairly constant stream of work, even in the slow season. At heart, we’re storytellers, and the best part of what we do – whether it’s drama or comedy – is bringing our characters and their situations to life.
What’s your goal for your channel, and your sketches?
Our goal is ultimately to be doing this full-time. We’re building careers and we want to properly dedicate ourselves to doing what we do best.
Anything else you’d like to share with audiences about the videos?
We’re called Three out of Five Stars as a nod to the weird mix of self-depreciating and self-aggrandising humour innate in our work and our own attitudes towards the work that we do. That being said, we aim a little higher than that.
