Agency is a satirical comedy series based around the activities of a small creative marketing agency in Wellington, staffed by three hapless but genuine and enthusiastic marketing wannabes – the owner, the creative, and the account manager.
The first season of the series will consist of seven episodes, running at approximately ten minutes each.
Agency is a creative endeavor in collaboration with Stem, an established video production company based in Wellington.
The creators are currently crowdfunding on PledgeMe for funds to complete production.
Viewfinder talked to Writer/Director Judah Finnigan about Agency.
What was the motivation and inspiration to make the web series?
Ben Forman (the director of Stem) has wanted to expand his company into the realm of original content or “branded entertainment” for a while now and thought a web series would be the perfect step forward. So in part, the web series is a great way to showcase the capabilities and creativity of the company. But also, a lot of the appeal for us is in gaining experience, using this as a platform to develop our crafts (as writers, directors, actors and producers), and to have some fun along the way.
“What’s so great about the web series format is that it’s not so much its own distinct medium as it is an answer to the restrictions of other mediums.”
What can audiences expect?
Audiences can expect a fresh, funny satire of the advertising world that doesn’t take itself too seriously. All of us have experience and background in marketing and have seen a lot of the absurdity in it, so the series is basically just us turning the lens on that world and asking some questions about the way we buy and sell ideas. But obviously, this industry is just a window to the modern world so I think anyone who so much has seen an advertisement or set foot in an office should be able to identify with it. But mainly, they can expect laughs.
How far are you through production; and when do you expect to be finished?
We’ve already shot a teaser for the series, which is basically a mini-episode. We didn’t want to try and raise money for the series and not have something to show sponsors, so this pilot basically sets the tone, introduces the characters and acts as a proof of concept for the series. But we have the full season of six episodes left to shoot and are currently in pre-production for the shoot right now. Filming will commence in early February, run for two weeks and we plan to launch a batch of episodes in April.
And were you inspired by other web series? What are your fav web series?
What’s so great about the web series format is that it’s not so much its own distinct medium as it is an answer to the restrictions of other mediums. We take influence from the film and television we love and channel it all into this format, which has way fewer boundaries in form, length and content. But with that said, we’re huge fans of everything from High Maintenance (the first place we direct people who ask “but what’s a web series?”) to New Zealand’s own Flat 3.
Probably our biggest inspiration would be Broad City, not just because they are a prime example of a web series striking mainstream success (of course, it’s now a television show), but because it’s just so damn funny and never lets anything get in the way of its commitment to madcap absurdity.
“It’s great that the web series have so much less of an expiry date. Shows of all kinds can continue to build momentum long after they “launch” or “air”.”
What do you love about making a web series?
We all love the accessibility of the whole process. If you have the gear and the talent, you can make a product and find an audience without any red tape. It’s also great that the web series (and television now too) has so much less of an expiry date. Shows of all kinds can continue to build momentum long after they “launch” or “air”. It’s exciting to know that your fan-base can still be growing once your process has already run its course and wrapped up.
